There are many ways to get referrals and increase your earnings. Your referral link can be found near the top of the page, under the "promote" tab. Use this to refer your friend. Attach to facebook. Post on forums, emails and more. You will earn up to 1000 points for the active referrals. Here is how it works.
When your referral does a search and wins points, you get a matching reward. This will continue until you have earned 1000 points from that referral. Each household member (13 years or older) canregister. So have your family members register through your referral link.
The more referrals you get, the more you make.

Under the tab "earn" click on invite and earn. Invite "one" facebook friend daily and earn one swagbuck and a potential referral! Do this once daily!
redeem for prizes
Swagbucks has a swag store with lots of different prizes. I personally like the $5 Amazon gift cards. earn 450 points (Have seen this done in a single hour) and snag an Amazon $5 gift-card.
